New Yellow Fever Case in a Czech traveller returning from Brazil

The details are as follows:

A confirmed case of yellow fever (YF) was imported from Brazil to the Czech Republic. This case was reported to local authorities.

The female patient returned to the Czech Republic from Brazil on March 7th, 2018 after travel to Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Chapada.

She had not been vaccinated against YF, tick-borne encephalitis or Japanese encephalitis.

Her first symptoms occurred on March 10th, 2018 and she presented with fever, malaise and influenza-like symptoms. She was hospitalized on March 12th and, on admission, presented with severe hepatic involvement, jaundice, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Serum samples taken on March 15th, 20th, 22nd and 28th were tested for antibodies against YFV (immunofluorescence IgG and IgM) with positive results and dynamics corresponding to acute infection. All four samples were sent to the laboratory in Rotterdam, Erasmus MC, and the diagnosis was confirmed. Both PCR and serology were positive.

This new case again highlights the risk of yellow fever in travelers returning from Brazil with implications for sites seeing travelers in both pre- and post-travel settings.
