Dominican Republic: malaria cases in Santo Domingo

Dominican Republic: Malaria cases in Santo Domingo July 31, 2018

The Santo Domingo West municipality registers 66% of malaria cases that have been registered in the country so far this year, according to the most recent epidemiological bulletin.

Only in the week that goes from the 8 to the 14 of July eight confirmed cases were detected, of which, seven are autochthonous and one imported. The latter corresponds to a Venezuelan man of 35 years, in which Plasmodium vivax was detected. The autochthonous cases come from the focus of transmission that is maintained in the La Ciénaga neighborhood, in Santo Domingo West.

During the last four weeks, 50 cases have been confirmed, of which 66% (33) reside in the Santo Domingo West municipality, for a total of 190 cases accumulated up to the epidemiological week 28. The highest frequency and cumulative incidence rate are registers in the Santo Domingo province.

The health authorities consider that the resurgence of cases is related to the rains caused by the remnants of tropical storm Beryl, which left the highest amount of rainfall in the National District, Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal.
