Thailand: Dengue fever outbreak kills five in Bangkok

The Health Department of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (HDBMA) issued a dengue fever warning for the capital on Tuesday, September 18, 2018.

The disease is reportedly spreading in Nong Chok, Huai Khwang, Bang Kapi, and Klong Sam Wa districts, with 5899 cases and five fatalities in 2018.

Bangkok's governor announced officials would begin a fumigation campaign in all 50 districts of the capital and enact other disease control measures. The current spread of the disease is thought to be exacerbated by recent rains and flooding in the region.

Context

As of September 8, Thailand has recorded 52,670 cases of dengue fever, resulting in 69 deaths. The numbers are higher than average, though indicate a lower rate than 2017.
