Canadians took three times more trips abroad in January this year than in 2022
According to Statistics Canada, this is more than three times the number of trips recorded in January 2022 and more than four-fifths (81.2%) of the pre-pandemic level in January 202
The number of trips to Canada by residents of overseas countries in January 2023 was three times higher than in the same month in 2022. It was nearly two-thirds (65.9 percent) of the number of trips in January 2020.
The agency recalls that on January 5, 2023, the Government of Canada implemented the (now lifted) requirement that travelers two years of age and older from China, Hong Kong or Macau test negative for COVID-19.
In addition, on January 7, the Government of Canada issued a travel advisory to avoid non-essential travel to certain areas of Mexico in response to a perceived increase in criminal activity and violence.
As of 12:01 a.m. on March 17, air travellers arriving in Canada on flights from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong or Macau will no longer be required to provide proof of a negative test result for COVID-19 prior to boarding.
