Honduras: State of emergency declared over dengue outbreak July 2 2019

The government of Honduras declared a state of emergency Tuesday July 2 2019 in the country due to the ongoing dengue fever epidemic.

Through the first week of June, a total of 11,436 cases had been reported, including more than 4000 severe dengue cases and 63 fatalities.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the most affected departments are Cortés (4,200 cases), Yoro (1,083 cases), Olancho (855 cases) and Santa Bárbara (643 cases). If we add the 1,042 cases reported in the San Pedro Sula Metropolitan Region, we see that 75 per cent of all cases reported to date are in north-western Honduras (8,647 / 11,436 cases).

Officials say the epidemic that starting to pick-up in April, is expected to intensify over the next few weeks unless the emergency actions that are to be taken begin to make an impact.
