India: Air Pollution

India: November 2019

Health officials on Friday, November 1, declared a public health emergency due to the "Severe" level of air pollution in New Delhi and the National Capital Region.

Very poor air quality levels have been caused by strong northwesterly winds dispersing the pollution accumulated in Delhi and northern India towards eastern India and the Bay of Bengal. The situation is expected to improve over the coming days.

The situation usually gets worse during the winter months. Children, the elderly and people with special medical conditions may be more vulnerable to particle pollution.

The Indian capital of 20 million people is experiencing every year very violent episodes of air pollution, due to both traffic, industrial discharges and fumes from agricultural burns that are in full swing in neighboring areas.
