Travel advisory: Air Canada integrates facial recognition
Air Canada becomes the first Canadian airline to attempt to integrate facial recognition for identity verification in Canada.
The pilot project is already underway in Vancouver for certain flights to Winnipeg and at the Air Canada Café at Toronto Pearson Airport, the company announced Tuesday in a press release.
The goal of the project is to introduce this type of identification in some Canadian airports and in Maple Leaf Lounges
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
-The use of facial recognition will initially be on a voluntary basis
-The boarding process and lounge entry will be simplified
-Customers participating in the pilot project will receive an invitation to use digital identification, along with instructions
-The process will not change for customers who do not wish to use it
A one-time enrolment feature will allow customers to create their digital ID in the Air Canada application, and the biometric data will be encrypted and stored only on the customer's cell phone
-Customers will provide additional consent for data to be used on the day of travel and stored for up to 36 hours, in accordance with Air Canada's stringent standard
